Perched atop a steep cliff of the Dangrek mountain range, more than 500 meters above the Cambodian plains, Preah Vihear Temple is a Hindu architectural masterpiece dating back to the 9th to 12th centuries, during the peak of the Khmer Empire. The temple not only carries profound cultural and religious significance, but has also become the focal point of one of the longest-running and most tense territorial disputes between Thailand and Cambodia.
Preah Vihear Temple was built to honor Shiva, the Hindu god of destruction and rebirth. Unlike the famous Angkor Wat complex known for its symmetrical layout and horizontal axis, Preah Vihear is arranged along a vertical axis from the base of the mountain up to its summit, consisting of a series of sanctuaries, vestibules, staircases, and stone gates leading upward. Each part of the temple is intricately carved, showcasing the artistry of ancient Khmer architecture. The temple’s structure reflects both the solidness of stone and the sacred, mysterious aura of its jungle surroundings.
A particularly notable geographical feature of Preah Vihear is that the only practical and accessible route to the temple lies on the Thai side, through Sisaket Province. Due to the rugged terrain on the Cambodian side—with steep cliffs and dense forests—the path from Cambodia is far less accessible. This fact complicates the issue of sovereignty: although the temple lies within Cambodian territory as determined by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling in 1962, the main access point being in Thailand makes the Thai side feel they have de facto control and legitimate interests in the site.
The root of the tension dates back to the French colonial period in Indochina. When Cambodia was a French protectorate, border maps between Cambodia and Siam (modern-day Thailand) were drawn with French involvement. After gaining independence, the Cambodian government cited the French-era maps to assert its sovereignty over Preah Vihear, while Thailand countered with arguments based on actual topographical boundaries. The ICJ’s 1962 ruling awarded the temple to Cambodia, but left the surrounding land unresolved, laying the groundwork for future confrontations.
Between 2008 and 2011, tensions escalated when Cambodia proposed that Preah Vihear be added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Thailand strongly objected, fearing that such recognition would implicitly acknowledge Cambodia’s sovereignty over the disputed area. The disagreement quickly escalated into military conflict, with repeated outbreaks of gunfire, shelling, and casualties on both sides. Civilians near the border were forced to evacuate, many villages were abandoned, and regional security was severely undermined.
