Perched precariously on a steep cliff in Shanxi Province, China, the Hanging Temple of Xuankong — also known as Xuankong Monastery — is considered one of the most extraordinary architectural structures in Asia.
Xuankong Monastery is regarded as one of the most unique constructions thanks to its “gravity-defying” building techniques.
According to China Culture, the hanging temple is located at the foot of Mount Heng — one of China’s five sacred mountains — about 80 km from the city of Datong.
The structure was built during the late Northern Wei Dynasty, around the 6th century, and is associated with the legend of a monk named Liao Ran.
What makes Xuankong Monastery famous is that the entire structure appears to be almost “suspended” on a cliff about 75 meters above the ground.
Most of the structure is supported by oak beams inserted deep into holes carved into the rock face, while the main load-bearing system is concealed inside the cliff itself. The structure is also reinforced with iron chains and wooden beams to increase stability.
From a distance, the temple appears to cling tightly to the mountainside. Narrow wooden corridors connect around 40 halls and pavilions, creating a feeling that is both fragile and magnificent. This special location not only serves to create a spectacular landscape but also helps protect the structure from heavy rain, direct sunlight, and falling rocks from the mountain above.
Inside the temple, statues of the Buddha, Confucius, and Laozi coexist within the same space. This is considered a symbol of the idea of the “unity of the three teachings,” which was once common throughout Chinese history.
After more than 1,400 years and many restoration efforts, the temple gradually expanded in scale and became one of the rare cliffside architectural works of ancient China.
Despite surviving for many centuries, Xuankong Monastery still amazes modern engineers and architects. Experts believe that ancient builders made extremely skillful use of the natural terrain. The overhanging rock above helps shield the structure from rain, while its location within a canyon reduces the effects of sunlight and strong winds.
Today, Xuankong Monastery is one of the most famous tourist attractions in the Datong area, along with the Yungang Grottoes complex.
To reach the site from Beijing, visitors can take a high-speed train to Datong in around 2–2.5 hours.
From central Datong, Xuankong Monastery is about 65–80 km away, with a travel time of approximately 1.5 hours by car. Visitors can take a bus from the Datong train station or bus station to Hunyuan County, then take a taxi or shuttle bus into the scenic area.
According to China Highlights, there is currently also a direct bus route from Datong Ancient City to the temple’s visitor center, costing about 39 yuan per person. From there, visitors continue by shuttle bus into the main sightseeing area.
Using ride-hailing apps is considered the most convenient option for groups or for those who want more flexible schedules.
Some visitors recommend arriving early in the morning because the site becomes extremely crowded, especially during peak tourist season.
According to local travel websites, tickets for the area below the temple cost around 15 yuan (about 58,000 VND), while tickets to climb inside the structure cost around 100 yuan (about 387,000 VND), as the number of visitors allowed each day is limited in order to preserve the historic site.
