Galata Tower was built in 1348 in the neighborhood of the same name. It was originally called “Christea Turris” (Tower of Christ / Tower of God). Over different periods, the tower was used to monitor traffic on the river, warn of possible attacks from the sea, serve as an astronomical observatory, function as a prison, and watch for fires.
Located in a favorable position near the Bosphorus Strait, which lies between Europe and Asia, Galata has become a famous tourist destination in Turkey. The tower always attracts large numbers of visitors who come to admire its architecture and enjoy views of the city of Istanbul from above.
Galata Tower is 63 meters tall and was built in the Roman architectural style. The tower has a cylindrical shape with a conical top and is made of stone and brick. The outer diameter at the widest part of the tower is about 16 meters, and the walls are nearly three meters thick.
Galata Tower has nine floors and is solidly built with brick and stone. The entrance is very narrow—just wide enough for one person—and visitors must bend down to pass through it. Today, the tower has elevators and other facilities to serve tourists.
The interior floors of the tower have been renovated to include souvenir shops, a museum, exhibition areas, an observation deck, and a restaurant. On the higher floors, many small windows are placed close together so visitors can observe the outside scenery.
The small windows behind walls more than one meter thick provide a unique viewing angle and serve as a distinctive feature of the tower’s landscape. Each window frames a different view of Istanbul, including the busy Bosphorus Strait, Islamic buildings with layered domes, lively residential areas, and rolling hills.
Large windows on the upper floors allow visitors to enjoy panoramic views of the outside. Some windows have observation platforms from which visitors can see the entire city of Istanbul. In the center is a detailed map model showing the exact location of Galata Tower.
Each large window creates a beautiful viewing space. On the top floor, some windows are not covered with glass and serve as exits to the balcony outside.
From the balcony, at a height of more than 50 meters, visitors can admire the panoramic view of Istanbul. Notable landmarks include the Haliç (Golden Horn), the Islamic Mosque Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, Galata Bridge, and the Bosphorus Strait.
Mr. Sila Ural, a local visitor, came to Galata Tower for the first time with his girlfriend. He said that this attraction is a place that cannot be missed when traveling to Istanbul. “The view from the tower is beautiful. It helps me feel both the ancient and modern architecture of the city,” said the 21-year-old.

One floor of the tower is used as a museum displaying artifacts and images related to the history of Istanbul and Galata Tower. Other floors are used for souvenir shops and multimedia presentations about the tower’s history.
The tower was once the tallest structure in Istanbul for many centuries. Galata Tower is open every day from 8:30 AM to 11:00 PM. The entrance ticket costs about 30 euros, roughly 900,000 VND per person.
