In mid-March, Bauhinia flowers bloom in white across the hills and mountains in many remote communes of Điện Biên province. The blossoms appear even more vibrant and pure under the sunlight. Among these locations, Nam Cum Village, Ngoi Cay Commune, Muong Ang District, is where the flowers are currently in their most beautiful bloom.
The entire village is home to approximately 1,200 ancient Bauhinia trees, growing naturally on the hillsides.
Right at the entrance of the village, many large Bauhinia trees, nearly a hundred years old, are in full bloom.
The village consists of 73 households, primarily of the Mong ethnic group, with houses scattered across the hills and mountains.
In mid-March, the temperature in Đien Bien ranges from 26 to 29 degrees Celsius, with sunshine encouraging the flowers to bloom fully.
Điện Biên’s Bauhinia trees grow mostly in the wild, some aged from several decades to over a hundred years. Their trunks are rough, weathered, and have a diameter of 50–60 cm.
Most of these trees are over 5 meters tall, shedding all their leaves to showcase only the brilliant white flowers.
Bauhinia flowers are also linked to the legend of Ban, known as the “Tale of the White Bauhinia.” The story tells of a beautiful and faithful Thai girl. After facing many hardships in love, she transformed into a Bauhinia tree, blooming in white and filling the mountains with its fragrance.
Under the shade of the trees, villagers have set up temporary shelters to welcome visitors during the festival.
Nam Cum Village was established in 1997. These days, the winding concrete roads around the village are being cleaned and widened by local youth groups to welcome visitors coming to admire the flowers.
