Al Naslaa – The mystery of a perfectly split rock in the desert

[Reading level: B2 – Upper Intermediate]

In the desert of northwestern Saudi Arabia, about 50 km south of the Tayma oasis, stands a giant rock formation known as Al Naslaa. What makes this rock famous is a vertical crack that divides it into two almost perfect halves, making it look as though it had been cut using modern laser technology.

Al Naslaa is approximately 6–8 meters tall and 9 meters wide. Not only does it have an unusual crack, but its two halves also stand on narrow stone bases, giving the impression that they could collapse at any moment. However, this remarkable structure has remained standing for a very long time despite the harsh desert environment.

Some sources claim that French explorer Charles Huber discovered Al Naslaa in 1883. However, there is no solid evidence confirming that he was the first person to find the rock. Ancient carvings depicting animals and humans can also be found on its surface, suggesting that people have known about this area for thousands of years.

Ancient carvings depicting animals and humans on the surface of Al Naslaa suggest that people were present in the area thousands of years ago. – Những hình khắc cổ mô tả động vật và con người trên bề mặt tảng đá Al Naslaa, cho thấy dấu vết của con người từ hàng nghìn năm trước.

So what split the rock with such remarkable precision? Researchers suggest that the crack may have formed due to tectonic stress within the Earth’s crust. Over time, weathering and erosion gradually made the two rock surfaces relatively smooth. Wind carrying sand may also have worn away the lower parts of the rock, creating its unbalanced appearance today.

However, the almost unbelievable precision of the crack, with its two nearly perfectly flat and parallel surfaces, seems different from the rough, irregular cracks we commonly see in nature. This has sparked curiosity and debate about how Al Naslaa actually formed.

The exact time when the crack appeared and the process that created the entire structure remain unclear. This has given rise to numerous theories, ranging from technology developed by an ancient civilization to interference by extraterrestrials. Nevertheless, there is no reliable scientific evidence supporting these speculations.

Al Naslaa remains a fascinating geological phenomenon. The mystery may not lie in some lost technology, but rather in the power of nature itself. Through geological processes taking place over long periods of time, nature can sometimes create structures so precise that people can hardly believe their eyes.
