Photographer Vu Ngoc Thien, 35, traveled around Da Lat in October to capture scenes of early morning mist covering the city. He woke up early to reach three hills in the city—Da Phu (pictured), Thien Phuc Duc, and Ngo Quyen—by 5:30 a.m.
“Capturing the mist in Da Lat isn’t as challenging as in Ta Xua; you just need to wake up early,” said the photographer, who has chased sunrises across Vietnam.
Da Phu Hill is located in Ward 7, about 10 kilometers from downtown Da Lat, and can be reached by motorbike to the base of the hill. The best time to enjoy the beautiful clouds and mist is between 5 and 6 a.m.
According to local residents, the path to the top of the hill is challenging, so a motorbike with a strong engine is recommended.
The moment of welcoming a new day on Da Phu Hill on the morning of October 20. At this time, dawn begins to break, the mist gradually dissipates, and sunlight pierces through the clouds, revealing rows of lush green pine trees on the hill.
Besides the mist, Da Phu Hill is also a popular spot for cloud hunting, often recommended by visitors to Da Lat.
Around 7 a.m., as the sun rises higher, most of the mist has cleared, revealing the view of Da Lat city below.
Along Da Phu Street in Ward 7, there are many breakfast spots offering a variety of dishes, including bánh mì xíu mại (Vietnamese meatball baguette). Some recommended places for visitors are Hang, bánh mì xíu mại Ngon, Uyen noodle, or Dalat Eden Café, which offers both breakfast and coffee.
Ngo Quyen Hill (pictured) is also a popular spot for cloud and mist hunting.
The photo capturing Da Lat enveloped in clouds was taken from the hilltop at 5:30 a.m. on October 15.
The hill is located in Ward 7, about 4-5 kilometers from the city center. The path up is easier than the one to Da Phu Hill. Despite its beautiful natural scenery and being regarded as the heart of Da Lat, this hill is less known among tourists compared to other city spots. However, it is one of the best places in Da Lat to enjoy the sunset.
The third location for autumn mist hunting in Da Lat is Thien Phuc Duc Hill (photo taken at 6 a.m. on October 10).
Located about 6 kilometers from the city center, the route here is often described by visitors as “quite challenging.” However, the reward is a cool, tranquil atmosphere.
Since the photo was taken later than at the other hills, much of the mist on Thien Phuc Duc Hill had already dissipated, unlike the dense coverage seen at Da Phu or Ngo Quyen Hills.
From the hilltop, visitors can see the majestic Langbiang Peak faintly shrouded in mist, along with other hills surrounded by undulating pine forests.
“You have to wake up very early to capture the mist; when you get beautiful photos, you’ll see that all the effort is worth it,” Thiện said.
Thien Phuc Duc is a bare hill with many grassy areas and pine trees, making it an ideal camping spot for visitors looking to hunt for clouds, mist, and enjoy the sunrise.
“To choose a place where the sunrise evokes beautiful and romantic feelings, I choose Da Lat,” the photographer shared.
