Zhong Shanshan, one of the richest people in China, was born in 1954 in Hangzhou. He is known for owning a large stake in the country’s No. 1 pharmaceutical company (Beijing Wantai Biological Pharmacy Enterprise) and for founding the bottled water company Nongfu Spring.
Unlike many other Chinese billionaires who amassed vast fortunes through technology and real estate, Zhong Shanshan got rich from the healthcare and bottled water sectors.
According to Forbes’ 2024 Rich List, Zhong Shanshan ranks 24th in the world and is one of the richest people in China, with an estimated net worth of $62.3 billion.
Later, as his family’s economic situation improved, Zhong Shanshan returned to school through an adult education program. After completing the program, he went on to enroll at the Open University of China.
After graduation, he applied to work as a reporter for Zhejiang Daily. During his time there, he honed his investigative skills and learned how various companies operated. This job gave him deep insights into China’s economic landscape at the time.
In 1988, he decided to leave journalism to pursue business ventures. He initially started a small farm to grow mushrooms and raise turtles. Although this first startup failed, these early efforts gave him valuable insights into the consumer market and helped lay the groundwork for future business projects.
Zhong Shanshan discovered that consumer trust, quality, and branding were key elements in running a successful business.
The Birth of Nongfu Spring
In 1996, Zhong Shanshan founded Nongfu Spring — a bottled water company headquartered in Hangzhou. Although China’s bottled water market was still relatively young at the time, Zhong saw the growing demand for healthy and safe drinking water.
Unlike other bottled water companies at the time that used purified tap water, Zhong created Nongfu Spring as a premium brand using water sourced from natural springs.
Zhong Shanshan focused on branding and marketing, using slogans like “Nongfu Spring: A little sweeter” to distinguish the product. His strategy proved highly effective.
Chinese consumers began drinking bottled water more frequently, due to concerns about health and safety, and Nongfu Spring quickly became one of China’s most trusted brands.
After the bottled water industry began to take off, Nongfu Spring added tea, fruit juices, and flavored water in the early 2000s, emphasizing the natural quality and purity of its water. The commitment to quality and smart marketing strategy helped Nongfu Spring gain widespread recognition in China.
It is evident that Zhong Shanshan’s journey in building a powerful business empire is a testament to sharp leadership and a deep understanding of consumer preferences. Guided by strategic vision, Zhong meticulously steered Nongfu Spring toward growth and unrivaled dominance in China’s bottled water industry.
Instead of resting on his success, he expanded into investing in Beijing Wantai Biological Pharmacy Enterprise, a company specializing in vaccines and diagnostic testing.
Beijing Wantai Biological Pharmacy Enterprise rose to fame during the pandemic, when it developed and distributed COVID-19 testing kits. This investment further boosted Zhong’s wealth and made him a notable figure in the healthcare industry, in addition to being a leader in the beverage sector.
Zhong has achieved significant financial success thanks to his astute business decisions. Nongfu Spring raised about $1.1 billion when it went public on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in September 2020.
He became the richest person in China after his net worth surpassed that of Pony Ma of Tencent and Jack Ma of Alibaba. His wealth continued to grow due to his controlling stakes in Wantai and Nongfu Spring.
By 2021, Forbes estimated his net worth at nearly $65 billion.
