The largest deep-sea port complex in the north

[Reading level: B2 – Upper Intermediate]

Hai Phong – With a vision to become one of the world’s leading seaports, the Lach Huyen port complex is being developed with a scale of 2,000 hectares and a 55 km coastline.

Located in Cat Hai town, Cat Hai district, the Lach Huyen port complex boasts a prime location, facilitating trade connections with domestic and international provinces and cities, contributing to the socio-economic development of the region.

The above image shows the Lach Huyen port complex in January 2025, with two berths in operation and four under construction.

Berths No. 1 and 2, invested by Hai Phong International Container Terminal Co., Ltd. (HICT), have been operational since 2018, with a total length of 750 meters and a throughput capacity of approximately 1.5 million TEUs per year (TEU is a unit of cargo capacity measurement in containers).

According to the master plan, this deep-sea port complex will cover an area of 2,000 hectares, with a 55 km coastline, aiming to reach a capacity of 100 million TEUs per year by 2030, along with a system of 15 modern berths.

Currently, Lach Huyen is the largest deep-water container port, maintaining its No. 1 position in terms of throughput in the North, ranking among the top 4 nationwide, and accounting for 23% of the market share of ports in Hai Phong.

With the ability to accommodate container ships of up to 14,000 TEUs and general cargo ships with a deadweight tonnage (DWT) of 160,000, HICT has made a breakthrough, allowing import-export goods from the North to be shipped directly to Europe and America without the need for transshipment.

With professional pilotage and ship towing services, along with various supporting utilities, Lach Huyen is not only a seaport but also a comprehensive logistics service center, meeting all customer needs.

Berths No. 3 and 4, invested by Hai Phong Port Joint Stock Company with a total capital of over VND 6,940 billion, have a total length of 750 meters and can accommodate container ships of 100,000 DWT. Additionally, a 250-meter-long barge and service berth can handle ships and barges with a capacity of 100-160 TEUs. The project also includes a container yard, transportation infrastructure, auxiliary works, and synchronized technical facilities.

The container yard at Berths No. 3 and 4 is being completed. The project investor plans to put the first phase of the port into operation before February 28, as a basis for implementation, inspection, and monitoring to complete the entire project by 2025.

The road connecting the berths is 37 meters wide with six lanes, with Hai Phong City investing over VND 700 billion for construction in the 2024-2027 period. – Đường kết nối các bến rộng 37 m, 6 làn xe được TP Hải Phòng đầu tư hơn 700 tỷ đồng để xây dựng trong giai đoạn 2024-2027.

Berths No. 5 and 6 are part of a project invested by HATECO Group. With a total capital of VND 6,425 billion, the project not only involves building two modern container berths, each 375 meters long and capable of handling container ships of up to 8,000 TEUs, but also includes synchronized infrastructure investment such as barge berths, warehouses, docking areas, and other facilities to meet the increasing demand for cargo transportation.

The project’s office building, featuring distinctive architecture and colors, is expected to be completed in September. – Nhà văn phòng dự án với kiến trúc và màu sơn nổi bật dự kiến hoàn thiện trong tháng 9.

Recently, the State Council for Construction Acceptance has agreed to approve the conditional acceptance results of the investor for the key project components of Berths No. 5 and 6 at the Lach Huyen port area.

The project is in its final stages of completion and is expected to be operational in February 2025.

Following the success of previous phases, the construction of Berths No. 7 and 8 is progressing according to the planned schedule, contributing to the completion of the modern container port system at Lach Huyen.

By 2027, with a total of eight berths and a throughput capacity of 6 million TEUs, Lach Huyen will fully meet the cargo transportation demands in the coming years.
