At around 1 p.m. every day, many office employees in South Korea bring their own toothbrushes and toothpaste to the restroom. Some companies even provide separate areas for rinsing and brushing.
This habit partly stems from the country’s distinctive food culture. Many everyday dishes contain large amounts of garlic, onions, chili peppers, and kimchi. The lingering smell of food often makes people want to clean their mouths immediately after eating.
Lee, 39, said that while working in the Netherlands, he usually waited until the restroom was empty before brushing his teeth to avoid attracting attention because of this unusual habit.
Jina Chung, who has worked in Singapore and the Netherlands, said: “Standing and brushing your teeth next to someone who is washing their hands is not an image that fits workplace culture in many countries.” She added that even in Singapore, where many foods have strong smells, brushing teeth after lunch is still not common.
According to data from the Korea National Institute of Health, 58.6% of men and 67.5% of women in Seoul brush their teeth after their lunch break. A survey conducted by the recruitment platform Saramin also found that more than 85% of respondents maintain this habit.
Besides food culture, the practice also stems from education. The South Korean government includes oral care in preschool and elementary school curricula. Children bring toothbrushes to school and brush their teeth together. Since the 1980s, the Korean Dental Association has promoted the 3-3-3 rule (brush your teeth three times a day, within three minutes after meals, and brush for at least three minutes each time), turning it into a social norm.
The collective mindset known as Nunchi also plays a decisive role. In the workplace, when most colleagues go to brush their teeth after a meal, those who remain at their desks may be perceived as lazy or unhygienic.
Professor Lim Myung-ho of the Department of Psychology at Dankook University said that this behavior reflects the collectivist culture and family-oriented values of South Korean society. “Colleagues are often viewed as part of an extended family, while the office is seen as an extension of the home,” he said.
According to Professor Lim, most people in South Korea regard this habit as a sign of solidarity, responsibility, and loyalty to the group.
