Dianchi Lake, located in the southwest of Kunming city, China, is famous for its breathtaking scene of tens of thousands of seagulls migrating from colder regions to escape the winter.
This lake is a favorite stop for Vietnamese travelers exploring Yunnan. Covering an area of approximately 300 km², it is the largest freshwater lake in Yunnan Province and the sixth-largest in China.
Although the area offers limited recreational activities—mainly a few nearby parks and walking paths for sightseeing—Dianchi Lake still attracts visitors, especially during winter, thanks to the spectacular sight of thousands of migratory seagulls.
The seagulls travel thousands of kilometers from Siberia to Kunming to escape the cold. According to Go Kunming, the seagulls have been appearing at the lake since 1985, and it has since become a regular migratory destination for them.
The sight of migratory birds draws crowds of locals and tourists eager to photograph them and feed them.
In 2023, the Kunming Bird Association recorded over 40,000 seagulls migrating to Dianchi Lake during winter.
The first flocks of seagulls arrive in Kunming at the end of October, with migration peaking in November. They remain until March, when they return to Siberia as spring arrives.
According to a representative from Danh Nam Travel, a tour company specializing in China tours, the seagulls at Dianchi Lake are quite friendly due to their annual migration habits. Tourists often buy small food packets for 4 yuan (approximately 14,000 VND) to attract the birds for close-up feeding and beautiful photos.
However, due to limited tourism activities, most organized tour groups only stop at the lake for about 30 minutes. Independent travelers often spend more time biking around the lake or visiting picturesque cafés in the area.
Two female tourists were delighted as a seagull swooped down to pick up a piece of bread.
Despite its stunning scenery and being likened to a “jewel on the plateau,” Dianchi Lake faces serious pollution issues, according to Travel China Guide. On Tripadvisor, some visitors have also commented on the lake’s murky and polluted water, although it still holds an overall rating of 4/5.
