The Nyingchi region is often called the “Switzerland of Tibet,” where ancient cherry blossom trees burst into bloom every spring.
Tibet is an autonomous region of China, located to the northeast of the Himalayas. It is the homeland of the Tibetan people as well as several other ethnic groups, and today also has a considerable population of Han Chinese and Hui people.
Tibet has the highest average elevation on Earth, about 4,900 meters. Travelers coming here often need to prepare well physically and bring medication as well as equipment to cope with the risk of altitude sickness.
Hieu Nguyen from Hanoi, together with a group of Vietnamese travelers, visited Tibet on a 12-day trip from late March to mid-April. Their itinerary included Lhasa (the capital of Tibet Autonomous Region), Laigu Glacier, Ranwu Lake, the sacred Yamdrok Lake, the turquoise Tsokou Lake, and Everest Base Camp.
It is spring in Tibet, and many kinds of flowers are in full bloom everywhere, such as cherry blossoms, apricot blossoms, and rapeseed flowers. Among them, cherry blossoms are the most abundant and striking.
Unlike cherry blossoms in Japan, which are planted in designated areas, cherry trees in Tibet often grow wild. Their colors range from pale pink to deep pink, and many are ancient trees.
The Potala Palace stands on top of Marpo Ri Hill at an altitude of over 3,700 meters in Lhasa. It is an architectural structure of great historical and religious significance and a symbol of Tibet, attracting many visitors.
Nyingchi is located in southeastern Tibet and is often called the “Switzerland of Tibet.” It features forests, rivers, snow-capped mountains, and long valleys.
Nyingchi lies at a much lower elevation than many other places in Tibet. When spring arrives, cherry blossoms spread from the valleys up the hillsides, creating a vibrant landscape, especially in areas such as Bomi, Pome, and along the Yarlung Tsangpo River. In addition, the outskirts of Pabonka in Lhasa also see cherry blossoms in full bloom.
The Nyingchi Peach Blossom Festival takes place from mid-March to mid-April. This is when spring arrives, with warm weather that creates favorable conditions for the flowers to bloom.
Cherry blossoms bloom for about three weeks, depending on weather conditions each year. When temperatures rise slightly and the snow gradually melts, it is the time when cherry blossoms burst into color across the forests.
Besides cherry blossoms, apricot blossoms also bloom during this period in Tibet.
Apricot blossoms can be seen at the Tashilhunpo Monastery, located on the western edge of Shigatse, the second-largest city in Tibet, about 270 km from Lhasa (photo).
Tashilhunpo features white and red walls stretching along the hillside behind the city. Not as tall as Potala, it is broader and deeper, giving the feeling of entering a maze with corridors, courtyards, temples, and dim stairways.
“Tashilhunpo is a place that makes visitors want to walk more slowly, speak more softly, and linger a little longer before leaving,” said Mr. Hieu Nguyen.
