Born in Henan province, one of China’s most underdeveloped regions, Qin grew up witnessing the harsh realities of rural life. He studied animal husbandry at Henan Agricultural University, determined to bring better farming practices to his hometown.
After graduating in 1989, Qin turned down a stable government job and returned home to start pig farming with his wife. With only 22 piglets, limited resources, and no safety net, the early years were difficult. Disease outbreaks, unstable pork prices, and a lack of veterinary support were constant challenges. Many in his position would have quit—but Qin chose to persevere.
Instead of expanding blindly, Qin focused on building a solid foundation. He reinvested profits into better sanitation, feeding methods, and breeding techniques. As his small farm grew, so did his ambitions. In 2000, he formally established Muyuan Foodstuff, a company that would eventually revolutionize pig farming in China.
One of Qin’s key strengths was his willingness to embrace technology—something rare among traditional farmers at the time. He introduced data-driven breeding systems to improve pig quality, installed automated feeding machines to reduce waste, and built multi-story climate-controlled barns that ensured optimal living conditions year-round. Muyuan also implemented real-time health monitoring and developed its own feed production facilities, creating a fully integrated supply chain from breeding to slaughter.
These innovations allowed Muyuan to scale rapidly while maintaining high standards of efficiency and hygiene. However, Qin’s biggest test came in 2018, when African Swine Fever devastated China’s pig population. While many small and mid-sized farms collapsed under the weight of the crisis, Muyuan’s strict biosecurity measures allowed it to keep operating. As pork prices soared due to the national shortage, Muyuan not only weathered the storm but expanded aggressively, gaining market share and reaping record profits.
By 2023, Muyuan had the capacity to raise 80 million pigs annually, and its flagship facility in Nanyang had become the world’s largest pig farm. Qin’s net worth skyrocketed to an estimated US$14.9 billion, making him the richest farmer on the planet.

He didn’t just raise pigs—he redefined what pig farming could be. Through calculated risks, constant reinvestment, and a clear long-term vision, he built an empire from the ground up.
