A century ago—give or take a few moustaches and monocles—the world was easy to read. Everyone owned a horse, and only the rich owned cars. A horse was transport, not a personality. It stood outside your house, ate hay, and worked as hard as you did. A car, meanwhile, was an extravagant, smoky miracle that announced wealth louder than any pocket watch.
Fast forward to today, and the script has flipped so neatly that it feels rehearsed. Everyone owns a car—or at least owes money on one. The rich? They own horses again. Only now the horse no longer pulls a plow; it pulls Instagram engagement. It doesn’t cost a few sacks of oats a year but tens of thousands of dollars to buy, feed, stable, insure, and occasionally pose beside.
In the early 1900s, a horse was affordable—roughly the price of a modest month’s wages. A car, on the other hand, could cost several years of income. Today, a basic car can be bought for the price of a few months’ salary or financed until retirement. A horse, however, can quietly consume the cost of a small apartment, every single year. What once was necessity has become luxury; what once was luxury has become background noise in traffic.
This reversal is not an accident. It is the signature of an era change.
Consider bodies. In the past, obesity was a visible badge of privilege. Only the wealthy could afford too much food, sugar, butter, and leisure. A round belly whispered, I eat well and work little. Thinness belonged to laborers, not lifestyle coaches.
Today, the meaning has inverted. The poor are more likely to be overweight, surrounded by cheap calories and expensive time. The rich pay extra to be thin—through organic food, personal trainers, boutique diets, and the luxury of saying “no” to convenience. What was once excess is now scarcity; what was once scarcity is now discipline.
Or look at silence. In the past, silence was common. Cities slept. News traveled slowly. Entertainment was occasional. Today, noise is everywhere—notifications, ads, algorithms yelling for attention. Silence has become a premium product. The wealthy buy it in gated communities, retreats, noise-canceling headphones, and “digital detox” holidays. Quiet, like horses, has returned to the stables of the rich.
Even knowledge has changed costumes. Once, information was rare and expensive. Books were treasures, and education belonged to elites. Now information is free, endless, and often ignored. What costs money today is not access to information, but the ability to filter it—to learn deeply, focus for hours, and think without interruption.
So what does all this mean?
Horses didn’t become valuable again because they changed. We did.

This is the lesson of era change: progress democratizes yesterday’s luxuries and turns yesterday’s necessities into tomorrow’s symbols of status. The wise don’t just chase what is expensive now—they watch what is quietly becoming rare.
Because in the next century, today’s symbols may look just as ironic. And somewhere, someone will write: “Once, everyone had this. Now, only the rich do.”
